Capabilities

VT's team is a practitioner in providing database services, both for its own product Europe in the Round and under contract for other organisations. These services include the complete provision of a database from design to distribution. VT's team specifically has over 19 years experience in the:

  • design of database
  • data processing and input
  • data collection and maintenance
  • data manipulation
  • indexing of records, including the use of the learndirect subject classification system (previously known as SUPERCLASS)
  • search strategies
  • design of records
  • production and dissemination.

Data collection

  • collection of data on post 16 education opportunities from FE colleges and school sixth forms in Buckinghamshire, Surrey, Kent, West Sussex, and three London Boroughs; in addition collection of work based learning opportunities from the respective Learning and Skills Councils: 10,000 records per year (Careers Management 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004)
  • collection of data on post 16 education opportunities from FE colleges, school sixth forms in Hampshire, Portsmouth, Southampton and Isle of Wight: 3,000 records (Careers Management 2004)
  • Updating of academic and vocational courses grid, for Choices 16+ publication of learning opportunities in seven London Boroughs (Careers Enterprise Futures 2003 and 2004)

Data manipulation

  • Curriculum map and data analysis for the Bedfordshire and Luton Area Strategic Review – The project comprised the production in excel, a series of curriculum maps, tables and commentary on provision in FE Colleges, school sixth forms, accredited and non accredited ACL provision and work based learning. The map covered enrolments, retention and achievement for 2000/01 and 2001/02 and enrolments for 2002/03. Detailed analysis and manipulation of ISR25 and ILR F04 data (Bedfordshire and Luton Learning and Skills Council 2002-03)

  • Revising and updating the learndirect classification system (Ufi 2003)

Involvement in learndirect

VT's team had a major involvement with learndirect between 1998 and 2003 which included:

  • being a partner in the Learning Direct Database Services Consortium (LDDS): 1998/01. The other partners were: NTICS, and DCA Data Services

VT's team has specific roles in:

  • data collection in the London region
  • data collection of National Training providers
  • chairmanship of the Working group of Data Standards
  • chairmanship of the Working group of the learndirect subject classification system
  • responsibility for the definition of the core standards for the learndirect data sets, and for the continual updating of the Standards.
  • responsibility for the continual updating of the learndirect subject classification system.
  • collection, maintenance and updating of over 65,000 records for learndirect.
  • Assessing the significance of metadata tagging.

VT's team managed and ran in September 2000 an invitational seminar sponsored by University for Industry on behalf of learndirect, on the importance of standards for learndirect.
